CIDR Framework™  ·  Research-Based Career Identity

Helping students
discover who they are
before deciding
what they want
to become.

The CIDR Framework™ combines Career Identity, Intentional Reflection, Design Thinking, and Responsive Mediation to help young people navigate purpose, education, and future careers in the age of AI.

What is the CIDR Framework™?

A new model for career identity development.

The CIDR Framework™ is a research-based model developed by Dr. Salena Burke through doctoral research focused on career identity development for youth.

Rather than asking students what they want to be, the framework helps them discover who they are, what matters to them, and how they can contribute to the world.

Grounded in design thinking, experiential learning, and reflective practice, CIDR meets young people where they are — and helps them navigate an uncertain future with confidence and purpose.

The four pillars

The CIDR Framework™

Each pillar works together to give students a complete, human-centered approach to discovering who they are and where they're going.

C
Career Identity
Who You Are

Helping students understand their strengths, interests, values, experiences, and emerging sense of purpose — before any career decision is made.

I
Intentional Reflection
What You Notice

Encouraging students to reflect on experiences, interests, aspirations, and personal growth through guided activities and journaling.

D
Design Thinking
How You Create

Teaching students how to approach challenges creatively, explore possibilities, and imagine multiple pathways for their future — not just one predetermined track.

R
Responsive Mediation
Who Guides You

Combining mentorship, supportive adults, and AI-assisted guidance to provide personalized, human-centered career exploration experiences.

Why it matters

Preparing students for a future that doesn't yet exist.

The careers of tomorrow don't exist today. Students need more than job lists — they need identity, purpose, and the tools to navigate whatever comes next.

🧭
Identity Before Occupation

Students learn to understand themselves — their values, strengths, and story — before selecting careers. Who you are shapes what you do.

🌱
Purpose-Driven Exploration

Career discovery becomes meaningful and connected to personal values — not just salary or job titles. Purpose is the compass.

🤝
Human-Centered AI

Technology supports reflection and exploration without replacing human guidance. AI amplifies — it never replaces — the adults and mentors in a student's life.
